Animal rescue fun day brings in funds
Iowa City Press-Citizen
By: Rachel Gallegos
To bring attention to and raise money for local animal rescues, the Bright Eyes & Bushy Tails Veterinary Hospital hosted a rescue fun day Sunday.
Dogs, cats and even a rabbit were on hand, ready for adoption, as children and adults played games and enjoyed food outside of the animal hospital and clinic.
"We're hoping that if it goes over well, we'll make it an annual event," said Jenn Berger, one of the Bright Eyes & Bushy Tails Veterinary Hospital's owners.
Mary Blount, program director of the Iowa Humane Alliance, said she also hopes the event sparks other opportunities for local rescues to come together.

Special Thanks
Baxter’s Buddies would like to thank the students at Coralville Central Elementary and their wonderful principal Mike O’Leary. Baxter made a special appearance at the end of the year assembly and we spoke to the kids about rescue and being a responsible pet owner. We had a great time and the children were very good listeners with great questions. The students also did a fundraiser and brought in their own change to donate to Baxter’s Buddies. We want to thank all of the students at Coralville Central Elementary for their generous support. Mr. O’Leary adopted Cooper, an English Springer Spaniel from Baxter’s Buddies and now Cooper along with Molly, his Brittany Spaniel, are school mascots. What lucky dogs! Mr. O’Leary has recently retired but will still share Cooper and Molly by taking them on school visits.
Cooper is a great success story to tell others about. So many people have the misconception that a rescued dog comes with baggage that can never be reversed. Cooper came to Baxter’s Buddies stuck to the ground in his own excrement living his entire life outdoors in a small run with very minimal care. You wouldn’t be able to tell now where Cooper came from. He looks great and is very loved by everyone. Going to school has been wonderful therapy for him and for the children he meets.

Petland Linked to Puppy Mills
Today, during a news conference, The Humane Society of the United States reveals the results of an eight-month investigation into Petland Inc., the country's largest chain of puppy-selling pet stores. The results show that many Petland stores across the country are supporting cruel puppy mills, even while telling unsuspecting customers that the dogs only come from good breeders.
