Charlie
We started looking for a companion for our Springer Spaniel, Jenna, in the winter of 2007. After contacting other rescues we were referred to Baxter’s Buddies. What a rewarding experience! The process was seamless from the interview, through the first meeting, to the adoption. Charlie, our newly adopted Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, had obviously been well cared for during his fostering. We knew he had socialization issues with other dogs as well as men. So we spent the first couple of months gradually introducing Charlie to various neighbors and their dogs. Slowly he became more trusting and by summer 2008, he was the life of the local dog park. Charlie and Jenna are now best of friends. Although they have separate kennels, they frequently choose to share one. We’re looking forward to many happy years with Charlie and Jenna.

We are dog lovers, but we lived in an apartment, were gone all day at work, and traveled frequently on the weekends... so for several years, it just wouldn't have been fair to adopt a dog. Tony has always loved Boston Terriers, and an opportunity arose to adopt a young female who had been gifted to acquaintance, but was unwanted. By this time, we owned a house and yard and had schedules that allowed us to stop home during the day, so we visited the dog and decided she would be a good fit. However, when the time came to take her home, the owners changed their mind and we were really sad to leave her. Tony started looking for another Boston, and after a few months, we found Frieda at Baxter's Buddies via Petfinder. Despite being terribly neglected before being rescued by Baxter's Buddies, she has a great personality and is quick to learn and eager to please. She is a lovely lady who travels like a pro, so we're able to take her with us on weekend trips. We're excited to have her as part of our family!

Phloyd's New Life
December 2008
In December 2006 we had recently purchased our first home and were excited to look for another 4 legged kid to add to our family and of course a play mate for Phlash, our 3 year old doxie.
We spent months on Petfinder to find our future doxie and even tried adopting a few but often found a situation to be that someone else had put in a word of interest first. I had faith that we would find the right kid eventually and sure enough, when I saw his adorable little face and Hawkeye collar it was love at first sight! He was just 2 months younger than Phlash and Phlash wore the exact same Hawkeye collar as we're UI Alumni and Iowa City natives. Even better yet, he was living with an Iowa City rescue, Baxter's Buddies, so I ran over to see him that very day on my lunch break. Yep, it was a sign and it was meant to be.
Phloyd (formerly named Nershi), has a heart breaking story. He had grown up with his own family but at age 3 they were moving and couldn't take him with. Their solution was to take him to their vet and have him put to sleep! This story makes me want to cry. He's my baby and to think that someone would put him down because his only fault was that he was inconvenient is horrible! He has the most beautiful eyes which just melt your heart. He loves cuddling and tummy rubs are his favorite! He always wants to lay out on the deck soaking in the sun. He just passes out; its totally hilarious! Of course he's on guard for any yard intruders like deer, turkey or the neighbor's cats but overall he is very mild mannered and became best friends with Phlash. I can't imagine them apart from one another.
